Shaping is becoming a more popular way to form teeth into a gear. Gear shaping is considered one of the more versatile gear cutting operations. There are 4 main types of cutters used in gear shaping: disk, hub, shank, and helical cutters. The cutters are what is used to form the gear teeth into the blank. The cutter moves up and down while the gear blank is gradually fed into the cutter. At the end of each cutting rotation, the spindle is withdrawn slightly to prevent further cutting into the newly cut teeth of the gear.
